Strategy – Decisions, Thinking and Strategy with “The Four Aces”

People ask me “What’s the link between strategy and financial health?”

I give them four words.
Customers. Delivery. Process. IP. I call them “The Four Aces”.
They are the backbone of your business. They shape how you earn, how you spend, and how you grow.

What are “The Four Aces”?

Ace#1:

When you find your marketplace, not just any market, but the right one. The one where people want what you offer and are willing to pay for it. They are your customers. No customers, means no cash and no cash means no business.

Ace#2:

You’ve made a promise. Now you need to keep it. Delivery is all about trust. It’s about doing what you said you would do, when you said you would do it, AND to the agreed quality standards. If you fail here, you lose more than money – you will lose your reputation.

Ace#3:

Process is where the work gets done. We need to do it efficiently, reliably and repeatedly. Good process saves time and money.
But a broken process? Well, that bleeds cash and burns people out.

Ace#4:

Your Know-How is your secret sauce. It’s what makes you different and better.
Create your Intellectual Property, IP. Then use it and protect it. Your IP turns ideas into money.

Cash isn’t just a number on a spreadsheet. It’s your fuel and it’s a tool.
As my father-in-law once said to me “Neither man nor fool can work without tools”.

You use cash to help you do the work. You use it to move forward and protect your financial health.

You know what these are:

• Working Capital – Wages, rent, supplies. The basics that keep the lights on and the wheels turning.

• Retained Earnings – Profits you’ve earned and kept. Your chance to grow, build, improve.

• Loan Repayments – Whether it’s company debt or director loans, paying loans down gives you breathing space and reduces risk.

• Asset Investments – Tools, tech, infrastructure. Things that help you get the job done.

When you do all this well, something powerful happens. You create a new, stronger, balance sheet.

It’s not just numbers. It’s a reflection of your decisions, thinking and strategy.

Not abstract ideas.

The Four Aces aren’t just abstract ideas.
They are your levers. They, in my opinion, should be deliberate choices, since they are the link between what you do and what you earn. If you ignore them, your financial health will suffer.
If you understand them, you can build something that lasts.

Action is required.

Thinking is required.
Strategy is required.
And yes – so is action. There is no free lunch.
